It's mind-boggling to me the amount of work it must take to make an anime, work that we never see. I'm guessing that once the story is written and has been plotted out roughly as a storyboard, preliminary sketches such as this are produced, discussed, tweaked and finally given to the animators who draw the actual sketches used to make the cels. I wonder how much art is drawn and discarded at this step?
It is kinda encouraging that even professionals still use reference lines for the placement of the features in these rough sketches though!
